Hazard Signs

 Hazard Identification & Action

A hazard can be described as anything that could cause you and others any form of harm.

A hazard that can cause you serious harm is described as significant.

Once a significant hazard has been determined the school must take “all practical steps” to eliminate, isolate or minimize the significant hazard.

Safety Signage

Here are some examples : Identify the sign, Describe what it means ,Explain what action you would take

Slippery when wet- be careful where I walk.

Construction site - means to keep away if unauthorized to stay safe - I would stay away unless I was authorized.

Engineering Power Tools

SAFE USE OF  MAINS POWERED TOOLS AND EXTENSION CORDS

Describe/ Explain what is a mains powered power tool

Tool used by plugging it into a power socket.

Where are you likely to use it?

Construction site, workshop, home.

Give 3 examples of a mains power tool you may have already used.

Cordless Drill

Metal Cutting Saw

Belt Sander

Describe/explain the task you used it for.

Cordless Drill: Drill holes in wood.

Metal Cutting Saw: To cut a piece of wood a few days ago.

Belt Sander: To sand down a piece of wood.

General safety around electricity.

What to look for, exposed wires in a power cable, any broken equipment,

What do I do if something is wrong. Turn the tool off, turn off switches, cut electricity.

General hazards and dangers of mains powered power tools,

Moving parts, vibration, noise, projectiles, entanglement.

What is meant by “RCD” Why is it important

Residual current device. An electrical safety device that quickly breaks an electrical circuit with leakage current to the ground.  It is to protect equipment and to reduce the risk of serious harm from an ongoing electric shock.

What is meant by “Double Insulation” Why is it important

Double or reinforced insulation is another method of protection against electric shock, consisting of an extra layer of supplementary insulation over the basic insulation, or a single layer of special reinforced insulation directly over the live parts.

Safety checks and safe working practices when using a mains powered tool, Make sure there are no exposed wires, wires aren't tangled, wearing PPE,

Hazards and dangers of extension cords

Trip hazard, exposure to water, exposed wires,

Safe Use of extension cords

Turn off when they start to feel hot, Don't bend cords when in use, dont use indoor cords outdoors, when unplugging pull the plug out not the cord.

Portable devices for detecting and signaling risks and nuisances, such as badges for detecting radiation, or personal gas detectors.

Who pays for your PPE?

The business your employed to or the school

Explain the different types/range of basic PPE that is available in the workplace.

Respiratory Protective Equipment: Dust Mask, Respiration Mask,

Hearing Protection: Ear Muffs, Earplugs,

Eye Protection: Safety Glasses, Welding Mask, Face Sheild,

Cultural Assessment- Home Economics

For the whole of this term our Home Economics class has been working on a Cutural assessment with the final product being a dish from that culture. I got in a group with Austin and we chose Italy. We had to answer a bunch of different questions about Italy's culture and put it on a slide show. Then we had to decide on one dish from that country and we knew from the start we would do pizza. We researched recipes and decided on a Pepperoni Pizza. On the day we were quite stressed because we were running out of time fast so we had to cut the dough resting short and hurry up and cook the pizza. The final product came out good and this is the link our slide show,

Persuasive Writing: Current issues/topics in NZ

LO: We are learning to express our views on a topical issue using "Write that essay" sentences.

Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school?

My Perspective:

#1) The Simple Sentence

I don't think teachers should be allowed to carry guns around school.

#11) The W-start sentence

While I can see why it could be necessary, I don't think it's needed to be armed while in a school as there can be many negatives.

#2) Very Short Sentence

Teachers shouldn't be armed.

Other Perspective:

#3) The Power Sentence

It will be a good idea for teachers to be armed around the school.

#12) Explore The Subject

Armed teachers, this is a good idea for themselves and students, this is for their safety.

#1) The Simple Sentence

Teachers should be allowed to carry guns around school.
