Calculating squares on the outside of a grid

For the past week we have been learning about how to calculate the squares on the outside of a 10 by  10 grid we came up with 6 calculations on how to do it. Today I will share two with you, one I came up with and the other my class found out together.

First Method:

10 x 4 - 4 = 36

So the reason for this is there are 10 squares of each side of the grid and there are 4 sides. So we do 10 x 4 but then we takeaway 4 because the corners are counted more than once.

Now lets replace the numbers with letters,

4n - 4 =36
Lets try this theory on a larger grid, lets do a 60 by 60.
60 x 4 = 240, 240 - 4 = 236

Final Method:

10 + 10 + 8 + 8 = 36

So the reason for this one is we count the whole row on the top and bottom which each are 10 then take the corners away and count the two sides and you have two 8's.

Convert numbers to letters:

n + n + (n - 2) + (n - 2) = 36
Lets try this one on a larger grid, 60 + 60 + 58 + 58 = 236.

In the film Coraline high angle shots are used effectively to establish a characters position of power. This is demonstrated in the scene where Coraline and Wybie return from visiting their neighbors. A high angle shot from from the POV of the other mother looking down the stairs towards Wybie makes him look vulnerable. This makes us understand that the other mother has all the power and might not be as kind as Coraline thinks at this point. The purpose of this is to show a character who is unhappy in the other world and foreshadow the horrific turn of events later in the story. Combined with the use of facial expressions, Wybie's mouth is frowning and his eyebrows are arched in in fear, the idea of being vulnerable is enhanced. This aspect can be compared to Coralines battle with the other mother at the end of the film where we see the true evil nature of the Beldam.

Symbols and Meanings: Coraline Film Study

How color creates mood or Atmosphere

 The color palette in the office is predominantly made up of blues and grey's. This creates an atmosphere of gloom, loneliness and boredom. This is combined with the use of a cold light from the window. The director has used this palette because in this moment Coraline feels sad and ignored by her father who is too busy working to spend time with her.

In the 'other' office the predominant colors are red and orange. This combined with the use of a warm light creates a mood of cheerfulness, curiosity and safety. The director chose this color palette because Coraline has just arrived in the other world and met the other father who wants to spend time with her.

At the end of the film these colour palettes have reversed with the other world becoming dark gloomy and the real world becoming bright and colorful. This shows Coraline's changing perspective as she becomes happier at home.

Palette 3:

The predominent colour in this palette are Green and Purple and they are spooky.

These colours create and atmosphere of Scariness and Nervous .

The Director used these colours because it makes it seem like Coraline is creep ed out and scared.

Matariki Research

Traditions:
In Aotearoa/New Zealand, the star cluster is known as Matariki. This name is a truncated version of the saying “Ngā mata o te ariki Tāwhirimātea” meaning “the eye of the god Tāwhirimātea” - and there's a growing trend to celebrate its pre-dawn rising at this time of the southern winter as the Māori New Year.   

History:
Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god' (mata ariki) or 'little eyes' (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.

Celebrations: 
In the Māori language Matariki is both the name of the Pleiades star cluster and also of the season of its first rising in late May or early June. This is a marker of the beginning of the new year.

Coraline Film Questions

Coraline is a 2009 American 3D stop-motion animated dark fantasy horror film directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 novel of the same name. Produced by Laika as its first feature film, Coraline depicts an adventurous girl named Coraline finding an idealized parallel world behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that the alternative world contains a dark and sinister secret.

The film was released in United States theaters on February 6, 2009 by Focus Features after a world premiere at the Portland International Film Festival, and received critical acclaim. Lighting:English

Lighting is used in this shot to make the house feel cold, old and run down. This is done by using a cool white light coming into the rooms through the cloudy window. The director has used this lighting to enhance the idea that Coraline's life at home is dull and boring and she is unhappy there. It also provides contrast to the other world which is bright and warmly lit.

Lighting is used in this shot is used to the other mothers kitchen feel warm, happy and welcoming. This light comes from a warm yellow light, from the light bulb. The director has used this lighting to make this world seem the opposite of the real world.

Lighting is used in this shot to make Coraline want to come into this world. The light makes Coraline feel happy and attracted to this world.
