Air Tools

What are Pneumatic tools? Pneumatic tools are a type of power tool, driven by compressed air from an air compressor.

What is an air compressor? An air compressor is a pneumatic device that converts power into potential energy stored in pressurized

air.

Diagram examples of compressors and an explanation:
An air compressor is powered by an engine that turns electrical energy into kinetic energy. It forces air into a container then pressurizes it and then is released to the desired pressure which is used to power different pneumatic tools.

Show a range of different air compressors you might come across.

Safety when using an air compressor. Dangers and hazards, preventive action, and servicing.

Electrical dangers, fumes, flying particles, high pressures, and high noise levels. You can avoid these by, wearing the correct PPE, using in the correct climate, general electrical saftey.

General PPE when using air tools:

Eye protection, Appropriate footwear, Hearing protection, Protective clothing.

Power Safety Tool Worksheet

Power  Safety Tool worksheet - Drill Makita DP 1410

General -

List safety points for your work area

1 Keep work area clean and well lit. A messy workspace could lead to an accident

2 Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of

flammable liquids, gases, or dust. This could cause an explosion

3 Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions could cause you to lose control and create an accident

List 4 electrical safety points when using a mains powered drill

  1. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Increased risk of electric shock

  1. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling, or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. This could damage the cord which could lead to an electric shock

  1. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Using an extension cord suitable for outside use will reduce the chance of an electric shock.

  1. If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. The use of an RCD can reduce the risk of an electric shock

List 4 personal safety points when using a mains-powered drill

1 Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Using PPE in the appropriate conditions can help lower the risk of injury.

2 Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. These could be caught in moving parts.

3 Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This means you have better control of the tool in unexpected situations.

4 If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. This reduces a dust-related hazard

List 5 points for safe use and care of the tool

  1. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. If the power tool does not turn on/off using the switch this means it most likely needs repairing therefore it is dangerous.

  1. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. This reduces the risk of the tool accidentally starting, which reduces the risk of an injury happening.

  1. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of children and/or untrained users.

  1. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Tools that cut sharp and clean are easier to control, less likely to cause an injury.

  1. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

List 2 servicing points

1. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Less likely to slip, break and/or cause an injury

2. Hold the tool firmly. Less likely to cause an injury.

List as many specific safety rules regarding using the drill

  1. Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord.

  1. Hold the tool firmly

  1. Keep hands away from rotating parts

  1. Do not leave the tool running. Operate the tool only when hand-held.

  1. Don't touch the drill bit or the workpiece immediately after operation

What PPE is required with this drill

Dust Mask, Saftey glasses,

Hazard Signs

 Hazard Identification & Action

A hazard can be described as anything that could cause you and others any form of harm.

A hazard that can cause you serious harm is described as significant.

Once a significant hazard has been determined the school must take “all practical steps” to eliminate, isolate or minimize the significant hazard.

Safety Signage

Here are some examples : Identify the sign, Describe what it means ,Explain what action you would take

Slippery when wet- be careful where I walk.

No phones - no phones allowed - not use my phone.

Fire hose reel - shows where a fire hose reel is located if a fire broke out - I would look for one of these signs to find a hose.

Eyewash station - somewhere to wash your eyes if you get something in them - If I got chemicals in my eyes I would go to this station.

Earmuffs - you must wear earmuffs - I would wear my ear muffs.

Construction site - means to keep away if unauthorized to stay safe - I would stay away unless I was authorized.

Engineering Power Tools

SAFE USE OF  MAINS POWERED TOOLS AND EXTENSION CORDS

Describe/ Explain what is a mains powered power tool

Tool used by plugging it into a power socket.

Where are you likely to use it?

Construction site, workshop, home.

Give 3 examples of a mains power tool you may have already used.

Cordless Drill

Metal Cutting Saw

Belt Sander

Describe/explain the task you used it for.

Cordless Drill: Drill holes in wood.

Metal Cutting Saw: To cut a piece of wood a few days ago.

Belt Sander: To sand down a piece of wood.

General safety around electricity.

What to look for, exposed wires in a power cable, any broken equipment,

What do I do if something is wrong. Turn the tool off, turn off switches, cut electricity.

General hazards and dangers of mains powered power tools,

Moving parts, vibration, noise, projectiles, entanglement.

What is meant by “RCD” Why is it important

Residual current device. An electrical safety device that quickly breaks an electrical circuit with leakage current to the ground.  It is to protect equipment and to reduce the risk of serious harm from an ongoing electric shock.

What is meant by “Double Insulation” Why is it important

Double or reinforced insulation is another method of protection against electric shock, consisting of an extra layer of supplementary insulation over the basic insulation, or a single layer of special reinforced insulation directly over the live parts.

Safety checks and safe working practices when using a mains powered tool, Make sure there are no exposed wires, wires aren't tangled, wearing PPE,

Hazards and dangers of extension cords

Trip hazard, exposure to water, exposed wires,

Safe Use of extension cords

Turn off when they start to feel hot, Don't bend cords when in use, dont use indoor cords outdoors, when unplugging pull the plug out not the cord.
