Photography

What have I done today?

Today I took pictures for every letter of the alphabet. Then I inserted them into a Google doc with a title of what they are. I couldn't find pictures for 8 letters.

Challenges: Finding different things to take photos of.

What Were Making:

Ingredients:
Sprite
Cocoa
Red Food Couloring
Bunsen Burner
250ml Beaker
Gauze Mat
Heat Mat
Tripod

Method:
1. Lay down heat mat and but tripod and Bunsen burner on top
2. Connect the Bunsen burner tube to the gas tap
3. Put gauze mat on top and turn on the gas tap
4. Put 150ml of sprite in the beaker and put on top until the water has evaporated.
5. Next add the red food coloring and cocoa powder and that's fake blood.

The Experiment:
The experiment is going quite well even though it is taking ages. We are currently evaporating the water of the lemonade.
The blood has been made (Thanks to Mr Stock) and we started filming.

Evaluation:
1). The experiment went well and the blood turned out quite well.
2). Everything was a success because our team worked well together.
3). Nothing really went wrong apart from the filming. The problem with the filming was that the blood didn't taste very nice and we spat it out heaps.
4). Next time we could try make different thing that are used in movies.

Deforestation

Last week we did an inquiry about something wrong with the environment. I made a site about deforestation.

Accessing Water

Purpose:
To Purify Water

Research:
Cole & I researched Homemade Water Filters and we found this photo which we used as inspiration.

Aim:
To make a Homemade Water Filter.

Equipment:

Plastic Bottle
Filter Paper
Rubber Band
Fine Sand
Charcoal
Coarse Sand

Rocks
Scissors

Method:

1. Cut a plastic bottle in half
2. Tie the filter paper with a rubber band on top of the plastic bottle
3. Put the top of the bottle upside down in the bottom half of the bottle
4. Put some fine sand in the top half of the bottle
5. Then add the charcoal
6. Then some coarse sand
7. Then add some rocks and hopefully it should have reached the top of the bottle

To test if it has worked pour water through and it should have purified it.

Prediction:
I think this water filter will work because it looks quite promising.

Results:
The water filter worked quite good but I didn't clean the bottle properly. The water first looked muddy and disgusting. Once I put it through again the water was much clearer but it looked murky.

Disscusion:
What Happened: The Rocks collected the big stuff. The sand collected the dirt and the Filter paper collected the fine bits of dirt.

Why did it happen: Because I chose to do it.

How did it happen: I poured the water in and it went through all the different layers.

My research proof:

Evaluation:

What could I do to improve my experiment: Clean my bottle properly and boil the water.

What different experiment could I do next time that is related to what I did: Make a longer charcoal filter.

To make a charcoal water filter you put charcoal in a leaf and roll it up.

P.E

Gymnastics:
This period I wan't to try to become more flexible.

Today in P.E I tried the parallel bar, the bar, and the beam. My favorite was the beam. On the beam I did forward rolls and I was quite nervous. On the bar I wasn't good because I didn't have the upper body strength, but when I got a boost from Aron & Eddy I was fine. The parallel bar was easy and quite fun.

Kaitiakitanga in Science

What is Kaitiakitanga?
Kaitiakitanga means Guardianship & Protection.  A Kaitiaki is a guardian. It is about looking after the environment.

First Thoughts

Why Is Looking After The Environment Important?

Looking after the environment is important because if we don't we could potentially die. If we pollute our water other people could drink that water and get very sick.

Aim:
We are growing a sucsesful garden.

Method:
1. First you cut a egg carton in half
2. Put some potting soil into the egg carton
3. Use your finger and make a hole in the soil
4. Put 3-4 seeds in each hole and cover them with the soil
5. Cover the seeds
6. Water the soil but don't over water
7.Put the carton in a sunny place

Photos:
This is a photo of the garden Cole & I made.

Water:

Predictions:
I think the blue water will go misty and smelly.

Gymnastics:

Before: In P.E we are starting a Gymnastics unit, I am not interested in Gymnastics because I have never really tried it.

After: I like Gymnastics because it was a fun topic and the teacher had fun with us.

Hauora In Science

Aim: I want to find out how long meat can be preserved?

Method: Try to preserve meat with salt, sugar, and honey.

Which of these ingredients will preserve the meat the best?

1. Put 1 piece of beef the size of a potato into a zip-lock bag and then put salt into the bag.

2. Then put the next piece of beef same size as the last into a zip-lock bag and then put sugar into the bag.

3.Finally put the last piece of beef the same size as the last two into a zip-lock bag and then put honey into the bag.

Equipment:
  • Honey
  • Meat
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Sanitary Gloves
  • Zip-lock Bags/Sandwich Bags

Photos:
Honey Meat:
Honey Meat
Looked:The Honey meat look like a disgusting piece of juicy meat
Felt: Sticky & Squishy
Smelt: It smelt like honey
Sound: It sound like a piece of rubbish being scrunched up

1 week later

The meat smelt so bad that I can't can't explain it

The meat looked like human feces

It felt hard, sticky and squishy

Conclusion:

  • Meat must be dry to preserve
  • Salt can kill bacteria.
  • Salted meat smells better than the rest.

Discussion
Why does salted meat smell better than sugar and honey meat?
Because salt is usually paired with meat.

Why can salt kill bacteria?
Because salt dries out meat.

Why was my meat disgusting?
Because there was still moisture on the meat which caused the smell.

The next part of my investigation is to redo the procedure but hang up the meat.

How to be safe in Science

Planning

Aim: I want to find out how to be safe in Science

Equipment:
Bucket
Detergent
Cold Water
Tube
Gas Tap
Safety Glasses
Lighter

Method:

  1. Get a Bucket.
  2. Put in a good Squirt of detergent.
  3. Fill half of your bucket with cold water.
  4. Take your loose clothing off, pull your sleeves up, if you have long hair tie it up.
  5. Connect a tube up to the gas tap and put it in the water.
  6. Turn on the gas and make some bubbles.
  7. Wet your hands and wrists up to your elbows.
  8. Put safety glasses on.
  9. Get a scoop of bubbles.
  10. Hold the bubbles away from your face.
  11. Use a lighter, ignite the bottom of the bubbles.
  12. Slowly open your hands.

Doing
Felt: Hot as the fire reached the bottom of the bubbles and shot up
Smelt: I smelt something that smelled like burning asparagus
Heard: I heard the class screaming as the fire reached my hands
Looked: It looked like a giant flame that shot up into the air and created black rings of smoke.

Explaining

Why do you roll up your sleeves?
Because if you didn't you clothes would burn onto your skin and scar you for life.

Why do we put water on your hands?
So our hands and arms are protected because fire can't go through water.

Why does fire go up?
The pressure is stronger at the bottom therefor the lighter flame shoots up . Which then creates black rings in the sky.

Why is fire hot?
Thermal energy is released.

Why do we put safety glasses on?
To keep our eyes safe.

Why do we put gas in the bubbles?
So they can light on fire.

Why do we put our hands up?
So we don't burn our body doesn't burn.

Why didn't it burn our hands?
Because we put water on them and fire can't go through water.
